We all know that California is in serious budget trouble. Right now California is facing a state budget gap of $24.3bn and lawmakers are desperate to find ways to resolve some of the budget issues. But desperation seems to be leading to a new low. According to BBC news, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has unveiled a plan to save money... wait for it... by phasing out school textbooks in favour of internet aids." Gov Schwarzenegger seems to think text books are outdated.
That is one of the most idiotic decisions in favour of saving money that i have ever heard. If this goes through education will be receiving one of the biggest blows in the history of makind. ANd it's not just education in and of itself. This decision poses a threat to whatever little improvement has occured to reduce the gap in disparities between the rich and poor. According to one High School history teacher, digitising textbooks may disadvantage poorer children... It is too bad Gov Schwarzenegger does not have the foresight to understand the impact his decision will make.
